The magnificent manor house, completed in 1583, is set above the historic village of Breamore overlooking the Avon Valley on the edge of the New Forest. Purchased in the early 18th century by Sir Edward Hulse, Baronet, M.D. , Physician in Ordinary at the Court of Queen Anne, George I and George II, the House has been lived in for the past 250 years by Sir Edward’s descendants. The House contains family portraits, tapestries, 17th century needlework, porcelain, period furniture, a rare James I carpet as well as paintings of the 17th and 18th century Dutch School and a unique set of 14 Mexican ethnological paintings. The Countryside Museum provides a fascinating insight into the days when the village was self-sufficient. Visitors can enjoy full-size replicas of numerous trades and crafts including a blacksmith, village shop, school, dairy etc. It also boasts one of the finest collections of steam-powered farm machinery, tractors, barn machinery and historical tools. St.Mary’s Church, built around 980 AD, is very close and is worth seeing if time permits.
