Chairman’s Notes

During 2017 the Newbury Association celebrated its 35th Anniversary. It has been a very busy year with talks, visits, a Spring lunch at the Esseborne Manor and a very successful coffee morning. None of this could have happened without the hard work of all the volunteers who have generously given their time organising these events. In addition, due to the redevelopment of New Greenham Arts, we unexpectedly had to find a new meeting venue for our monthly lectures. After a very long and difficult search the Committee decided that St George the Martyr Church on the Andover Road was the most suitable alternative venue.

COMMITTEE VACANCIES : Michael Perkin and Anne Bennett will be leaving the Committee at the March 2018 AGM.  Michael has been our Lecture Programme Organiser for the last 7 years and has worked tirelessly to ensure we have had speakers covering many varied and interesting subjects each month. Anne has served on the Committee for the last 3 years and has also been responsible for Publicity for the last 12 months. Anne has also been a very active member of the Planning Committee arranging day trips and extended visits. We thank them both for their hard work and commitment to the Association.

Welcome to Colin Waltho who has come forward to replace Michael Perkin as Lecture Programme Organiser. However, we still have vacancies for a Vice Chairman, someone to organise Publicity and volunteers to organise day trips. Day trips and extended visits are fun to organise and could possibly be run by a couple, or two friends, so please consider volunteering.

The Afternoon Theatre Group is now in its 4th year and has proved to be very popular with members.  A further 4 theatre visits are being planned for 2018. Information and booking slips are sent out to members between Newsletters so if you would like to receive regular details, please fill in “The Expression of Interest Slip” which you will find later in the Newsletter and send it to me with 4 s.a.e.

In 2011 we decided to extend our fund-raising activities to include travel grants to local schools in West Berkshire and North Hampshire to pay for coach travel to National Trust Properties. This grant scheme has been well received by local schools. During 2017 we have given grants to Stockcross Primary School, Welford & Wickham Primary School, Kennet School Academies Trust and Brightwalton Primary School.

Our organisers have planned a very full programme of talks and visits during the coming year which I hope will be well received and supported by the members.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.
